UNI Coins in Action - Burnaby
Douglas Road Elementary
The staff, students, and custodians at Douglas Road Elementary in Burnaby have chosen to save energy as their kind act to the environment.
Everyone remembers to turn off the lights in the classroom when the room is not being used. This simple act has resulted in great savings. In December the school saved $175, $125 in January, and $130 in February. The Director of Facilities in Burnaby said that if every school did this, the District would save $70,000 each year!
The Coin-spiracy Team just couldn't resist dropping in on this school to meet and interview these young leaders. In addition to sharing their energy saving strategy, students also shared their vision of a kinder world - from seeing everyone working together to no more war. Here are some of the faces of kindness in action.

Morley Elementary
Morley Elementary students created a beautiful bulletin board display to document their kind acts. At the heart of their Coin-spiracy display is the Earth. Surrounding the globe are the kind acts. Acts to the environment are documented on hand cut leaves. Acts to self are written on gingerbread people and acts to the community are recorded on stars. Principal Steve Cairns reports that the school has also engaged in other very positive projects as an offshoot to the Coin-spiracy.

New Vista
KindActs welcomes New Vista Care Home as our first care home Coin-spiracy participant. While not a youth group, these caring people are definitely young at heart and we just couldn't resist piloting the Coin-spiracy with this enthusiastic group.
The Resident Council President even composed a kindness song, which she sang at their special kindness assembly.

As their kind act to self, residents ordered Chinese food for a special dinner, where they shared organizing duties and friendly cheer.
As their kind act to the environment, the residents decided to give the park in their neighbourhood a facelift by planting flowers, collecting litter, sweeping the pathways and even painting a picnic table. To celebrate their accomplishment, they enjoyed a picnic in the park, with great food and musical entertainment.
