Coin-spiracy 2003/04
UNI Coins in Action - Chilliwack

Mount Slesse Middle School

As a kind act to self, the leadership/broadcast students went on a two-day retreat where new strategies for promoting kindness and caring in their school and environment were explored.

As a kind act to the environment, the students planted trees at the Blue Heron Reserve.

As a kind act to another, the school hosted a school wide read-a-thon to raise funds for the Room to Read program in hopes of brightening the horizons of children in a third world country who live without the benefits of education. The school raised close to $7,200 in one week!!!!

The students then hosted a "Celebrating Success" assembly where they handed the great cheque to the Room to Read representative who then showed slides of some of the students who would benefit from their generous gift. The plan is to build libraries in five developing countries. A plaque will be posted in one of the five libraries to acknowledge Mount Slesse's great contribution.

Watson Elementary School

Watson Elementary students are committed to making this a kinder world and have in fact adopted kindness as a school expectation.

"Coin-spiracy has been a wonderful program for our school to be involved in…Students are learning to be more kind and considerate...Coin-spiracy and the UNI have been focal points. The program has gone hand in hand with our Effective Behaviour Support program's emphasis on Social Responsibility. Our school's 4 expectations do not include kindness, but Coin-spiracy has insured that kindness is our 5th expectation...", says Dan Koenig, Watson Elementary Teacher.

Students shared their vision of a kinder world through drawings and essays.

"My favourite part of the Coin-spiracy is that other people who do not know that they are not treating earth with respect can learn and then the one who learned can teach others who do not know. If I had the opportunity, I would probably ask Austin if we could help other people join the Coin-spiracy", Watson Student.

As a kind act to self, the school launched a Watson Fitness Initiative. A number of classes are involved in the weekly fitness run and some students, one class in particular, are training for the Vancouver Sun Run on April 18, 2004!

"My favourite part was helping the students look after themselves through increased attention to improving physical fitness. We have done a lot of running, swimming, hiking, power walking, skipping rope, cooperative soccer and cooperative basketball. They enjoy physical activity and play outside daily after school. They coach other students to be more physically active as well. Students have also done Brain Gym to integrate their mind and body. Once they learn how it helps them, they teach others. Students have coached many primary classes."
- Dan Koenig, Watson Elementary Teacher.
