UNI Coins in Action - Mission
Hatzic Elementary
As a kind act to self, Grade 5/6 students chose to focus on a personal goal that was both meaningful and beneficial to their growth as individuals. To monitor their progress, students designed a thirty-day checklist. Examples of goals included: a talented speed skater working on a new stride; eating less junk food; spending less time on the computer and more time outside with friends or on hobbies such as sketching and reading. At the end of the thirty days, students evaluated how the past month had affected them and whether they felt they had attained their goal.
As a kind act to the environment, each student planted a Japanese Maple on the school grounds. A number of students also requested an extra tree to take home to plant.

As a kind act to another, students chose to establish international friendships. The students all wrote letters of introduction about Mission, British Columbia and Canada and sent a large box of goodies including flags, brochures, pictures, games and maps to a school in Salisbury, England.
Rob Plowright, Coin-spiracy contact at Hatzic Elementary, commented that the class enjoyed the thought of getting mail so much, that they have subsequently written to schools across North America. " We have also sent a package off to a school in South Korea… The students selected a city and then sent their letter off. To date we have had about 30 responses and built a solid connection with a school in Arizona."
