WestShore Centre for Learning and Training took part in an initiative called "Building Futures Through Education: The Afghan Project". The initiative, driven by Langford Fire Chief Bob Beckett, involved collecting materials for hygiene kits, school supplies and reading materials (used textbooks) to send off to Afghanistan for Canadian troops to distribute.
On October 18th, forty volunteers from Rotary, the HMCS Algonquin, schools and the community packed approximately 6000 books, 4000 hygiene kits, 2500 school supplies kits and 15 large boxes of fire fighting equipment. These have now been sent to Afghanistan, courtesy of the Canadian Military.
The 3rd Batallion Group from the Royal Canadian Regiment in Kabul, Afghanistan reports:
"The hygiene kits were distributed to a number of points including orphanages, Nomad and Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps. The recipients were very grateful and the military personnel were extremely proud to be able to help."
"The supplies and textbooks were distributed to a number of schools and orphanages in the Kabul area. The students were very happy to receive the supplies as their parents, not the State, are responsible for student stationary. Many of the children are learning English as part of their curriculum. The textbooks will help them in this and give them insight into the Canadian culture. The library received some of the general interest books to expand their collection and provide the surrounding community with a broader spectrum of knowledge."
