Kind Act Ideas

To join the Coin-spiracy, participants are asked to commit three kind acts: one for self, one for the environment and one for another. The following are some kind act tips and examples.

Kind Acts to Oneself

A 'kind act to oneself' can apply to an individual or an organization as a whole. For example, if you are a school committing a 'kind act to self', you could decide to interpret 'self' as the 'school' and decide to remove graffiti from the school walls, create a sanctuary for reflection, beautify or clean up the schoolyard.

Alternatively, you could interpret 'oneself' on an individual level and engage all students in committing an act that is nurturing to their well being. Each student could pledge to eat healthy snacks for a week, exercise or read a book.

Kind Acts to Oneself Examples:
Abbotsford students running
  • Beautify the schoolyard
  • Host events in honour of people's unique cultures
  • Participate in read-a-thons
  • Perform school skits to build self-esteem and encourage compassion
  • Maintain a daily eating log (incorporate into Health & Family Planning class).
  • Exercise 30 minutes everyday
  • Hand homework in on time.
  • Cut down on TV time or computer games and use that extra time to walk in nature, create art or learn a new activity.
  • Create a "life pie" of different areas of your life. Draw one that reflects your current situation and another that represents your desired life pie balance. Commit to one action for a month that will get you closer to your ideal.

Did you know...
Southridge Elementary students and teachers made sure their UNI Coin reached its destination: Maylands Peninsula School in Perth, Australia. They actually "walked" to Australia as their "kind act to self" - 800 kilometers to Vancouver, then 4,356 to Honolulu and finally 16,034 to Perth, Australia. That's quite a few jogs around the block for everyone involved!

Roots & Wings school started their day with a 10-minute yoga class. Although this exercise was only planned for one week, it was so successful in preparing students for their day of learning, they continued this program for the remainder of the school year.

Kind Acts to the Environment

A 'kind act to the environment' can encompass any act performed to nurture, protect or beautify the environment and any living creature that depends on it.

  • Save energy and improve recycling programs
  • Plant trees and scatter seeds
  • Adopt a trail, stream or park
  • Clean and beautify the grounds and neighbourhood
  • Build wildlife sanctuaries
  • Raise awareness for precious resources
  • Pack litterless lunches
  • Raise funds for environmental causes
  • Volunteer at the SPCA

Did you know...
You can make a huge difference just by turning off the lights?
The staff, students, and custodians at Douglas Road Elementary in Burnaby make a habit of turning off the lights when a classroom is not being used. The school saved $430 in just three months. Director of Facilities in Burnaby said that if every school did this, the district would save $70,000 each year.

By improving their can and bottle collection and packing litterless lunches, a school cut their garbage collection by two-thirds. They then used the money collected from recycling cans and bottles to supplement their kind act to another.

Kind Acts to Another

A 'kind act to another' can apply to an individual or an organization. For example, you may decide to raise funds to help fulfill a child's dream or organize a play for a senior residents' home.

Once the 'kind act to another' has been committed, the coin is then passed on to the recipient of the kind act, be it an individual or an appropriate representative of the recipient organization.

Kind Acts to Another Examples:
Cove Cliff Elementary
  • Partner with less fortunate schools to build their library and realize their goals
  • Learn about and express gratitude for those providing important services to the community. (One school adopted City Hall while students from another school personally delivered their kind act to the Governor General!)
  • Collect donations and handcrafted gifts for communities in need
  • Include others that seem left out or help another student with homework
  • Volunteer time in community service
  • Raise funds while raising spirits
(St. James Daycare committed 1,000 acts of kindness. For each act of kindness, toddlers placed a penny in their kind act jar. They raised $10 to buy a board game for Urban Promises.)
  • Host concerts, coin drives, marathons, read-a-thons and spell-a-thons to raise funds or goods for charitable causes
  • Touch hearts through personally decorated care packages

What happens when two Coin-spiracy participants join forces?
WestShore Centre for Learning and Training and Bayview Elementary took part in an initiative called "Building Futures Through Education: The Afghan Project". 6000 books, 4000 hygiene kits, 2500 school supplies kits and 15 boxes of fire fighting equipment were shipped to Afghanistan.
